MOTHER OF GEORGE

Directed by Andrew Dosunmu

Nigeria, USA, 2013 , 107 min.

Focus on the African Immigrant Experience

In a visual and aural feast of dazzling colors, textiles, music, and dance, Brooklyn restaurant owner Ayodele and his bride Adenike are married and ceremoniously blessed with traditional Nigerian prayers of fertility. Adenike struggles to conceive a child, and with mounting pressure from her oppressive mother-in-law, she must take drastic measures to save her marriage. With sumptuous, spellbinding cinematography, this exquisite film delivers both a love story and an enlightening look at immigrant life in the Crown Heights’ Yoruba community in Brooklyn. Andrew Dosunmu presented his first feature film, Restless City, also a look at the New York West African immigrant community, at the 22nd CFAF in 2012.

In English and Yoruba with English subtitles.

Rated R for sexuality.

Sponsored by Portland State University.
