FANIE FOURIE’S LOBOLA

Directed by Henk Pretorius

South Africa, 2013 , 90 min.

Fanie Fourie’s Lobola is a comedy that celebrates how far South Africa has come since the end of apartheid in 1994. Inspired by a book of the same name by Nape à Motana, the film is about Fanie Fourie, a young Afrikaner who designs custom cars that resemble animals, and Dinky Magubane, a young Zulu business woman. Against all odds, the two fall in love with each other and have to navigate their way through the complicated process of lobola (the traditional dowry). Funny yet hard-hitting, the film tackles the thorny subject of cross-cultural relationships with humor and honesty.

In Zulu, English, and Afrikaans with English subtitles.
